Our Story
Founded in October 1990, Glenaura Pipes & Drums began under the guidance of Pipe Major Bill MacLeod and Pipe Major Tommy Thompson. Pipe Major MacLeod was renowned for his piping and teaching throughout Manitoba, while Pipe Major Thompson brought experience from Scotland’s illustrious Shotts & Dykehead Band and from leading several top Canadian ensembles.
Starting with a group of enthusiastic young pipers and drummers, Glenaura quickly advanced through the competitive ranks, moving from Grade 4 to Grade 2 in just five years under the steady leadership of its founders.
In 1994, Pipe Major MacLeod became Pipe Major Emeritus, with Pipe Major Thompson taking on the role of active leader and shaping the band’s musical direction. Throughout the 1990s, Glenaura competed successfully across Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and Minnesota, earning numerous awards—most notably, taking top honours in Grade 2 at Calgary and Canmore in a standout year.
After a brief pause in competitive activity and a decline in membership, Pipe Major Leigh Ward assumed leadership in 2001. Under her guidance, the band grew and returned to the competition field, achieving success at the Grade 3 level.
In 2015, leadership passed to our current Pipe Major, Evan Maydaniuk. Today, Glenaura has refocused its efforts on performance, enriching the cultural life of Winnipeg and beyond. We are proud to call the Irish Association of Manitoba our home.
